TECHNIQUES AND FINISHES
VENETIAN PLASTER
Venetian Plaster has been around since the 1500's, when builders in Venice, trying to make buildings as light as possible so not to sink into the the mud beneath their city, enhanced lime plaster with marble dust to simulate the look of marble without the weight.
Redfern Design specializes in Venetian Plaster. Applied with a flexible spatula then burnished with a a more rigid stainless steel trowel, a skilled applicator can produce a Venetian Plaster finish and produce anything from a glossy marble-like surface to a a textured antique effect. The outcomes for the most demanding and in demand designers, architects and homeowners is magnificent.

CLAY PAINT
Clay paint a water based breathable emulsion when completely dry is a lush velvet matte. It has no smell, save a hint of wet earth as it slowly dries. It can be colored in any contemporary color or traditional earth tone. It minimizes condensation and naturally deters mildew. Free of acrylics oils and odors. This can benefit allergy and asthma sufferers. Ideal for existing plaster walls and binds well to the more ubiquitous drywall surfaces. I typically use a large natural bristle brush not unlike a stain brush to layer my colors. A single color can provide a non-static look of plaster.
I highly recommend clay paint from Bioshield. They have many great products for painted finishes including paint especially created for bee hives. Clay paint can be sealed or stained with a carnauba wax for high traffic areas or areas exposed to fats or oils.

MURALS
Perhaps one of my favorite areas of painting design. The creme de la creme of painting. Many of my projects involve either a small amount of hand painting as in a border small motif all the way to large murals on the exterior of buildings. My typical rate of mural work ranges between $50- $150.00 per square foot, depending on the detail of design.
Murals can be done on muslin or canvas and installed like wallpaper. I have worked in acrylics and oils, however, earth pigments with clay can have a timeless look of antiquity and easily be preserved under clear coats of wax.

FAUX FINISHES, FAUX BOIS AND TROMPE L'OEIL
Faux finishes cover a wide range of painted surfaces, from translucent glazes to more complex layering utilizing multiple shades and colors. “Faux” translates to “made in Imitation”. “Bois” is French for wood. Faux Bois is a classical way to introduce various types of wood to places where we otherwise cannot afford them.
Trompe L'oeil translates to "fool the eye". This is a wonderful way to create perspective and whimsy to our spaces.
